JUST PUBLISHED - Chen and colleagues evaluated the geographic distributions of plants bearing fleshy vs non-fleshy fruits in Australia. They found that fleshy fruits were more frequent along coastal fringes, while non-fleshy fruits were more frequent in the inland areas of that country. Those results highlight a latitudinal gradient in the proportions of fleshy-fruited species on a continental scale, and a correlation between fruit type and climatic conditions.
