We have a confirmed diagnosis. Mike's lung disease is called: Atypical Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis.
Abbreviations:
Pulmonary Fibrosis = PF
Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis = IPF
Definitions:
PF = Lung Disease
Pulmonary fibrosis is a condition in which the tissue deep in your lungs becomes scarred over time. This tissue gets thick and stiff. That makes it hard for you to catch your breath, and your blood may not get enough oxygen. Normally both lungs mimic each other. It is also called honeycombing. Like a bee hive is building a nest and it smothers the lung(s) out.
Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis = IPF
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic irreversible and ultimately fatal disease characterized by a progressive decline in lung function. (Life Ending Lung Disease). The term pulmonary fibrosis means scarring of lung tissue and is the cause of worsening dyspnea. Fibrosis is usually associated with a poor prognosis. His lungs sounds like you are pulling velcro apart. House Dad's Literary Life
Idiopathic = relating to or denoting any disease or condition that arises spontaneously or for which the cause is unknown.
There is no known cause. They don't know why.
Atypical = In Mike's case, the left lung is worse than the right one.
Life Expectancy: 3-5 years
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a fatal disease with an average life expectancy of 3-5 years after diagnosis. This is an average, however, and many patients will live either longer or shorter depending on their individual circumstances.
Our journey started back in the summer of 2015. The first pulmonary function test was done on 10/15/15.
We had an initial meeting and some pretesting done on 7/12/17 with the UK Lung Transplant Center. We now have to gather all medical documentation on Mike and forward to them. The next step will be to have 3 days of intense head to toe testing at UK. We will be home at night. All of the results will then go to the committee for review.
We may or may not get accepted into the program. The Doctor just kept saying his numbers are declining rapidly.
There are 4 stages to this disease. Since January, Mike's numbers have been dropping rapidly. He is now in Stage 3. If we don't hit a plato or hopefully can get a drug called Esbriet (pirfenidone) approved by the pharmaceutical company to try to slow this down. Then we will hit stage 4 sooner rather than later.
Here is Mike's Medical History since June 1986.
under age 7 - Bright's Disease
1 er visit - Bell's Palsy episode
Right Heart Cath June 2015 - 1 stent
Maybe a common cold or 2.
No sprains, strains. All physicals and colon, all routine annual well check up visits are A+ okay. Non smoker.
So in 31 years, for a healthy man, Why this? Why now?

I just can't talk anymore.
