A Step into the Past

Growing up in the tough city of Glasgow, Raymond Docherty was abused mentally and physically and turned to drink by the age of just 14.
He soon became an alcoholic as he lived in constant fear of the violence at home with his parents and three brothers.
Totally neglected, he was in and out of hospital for years - after one 'drying out' period he was given just two years to live.
Desperately lonely Raymond was on the verge of suicide as he also found himself sleeping 18-hours daily because of his M.E. - his parents merely shouting at him for being "lazy".
His condition meant he had to give up working as a carpenter and joiner - Raymond's only outside social outlet - and so he became a total recluse.
He told Good News: "I was on the verge of suicide as I couldn't relate to the world and shut myself off. It was the only way I could cope with the abuse."
However all that changed over a quarter-of-a-century ago when Raymond believes he had a 'vision' of the Lord Jesus Christ in his bedroom.
"I thought a Christian was someone who was religious and went to church.
"I even thought I was a Christian because I'd been christened as a baby, but I'd never experienced God before."
Raymond, who felt the "tangible" presence of God in his room, said the whole encounter left him "amazed" and hungry to know more.
"I knew there and then this was my turning point when I quite literally saw the light. Jesus revealed himself to me as the glory of God appeared in my bedroom.
"I was filled with joy and a new hope as I knew God had come to rescue me."
A week later Raymond approached street preachers in the city centre, who explained what being a Christian is.
He says: "I asked God to forgive me of all my sins, and asked Him into my life to become by Lord and Saviour."
Raymond's desire for drink simply left and he hasn't touched a drop since.
His M.E. was also cured - this time over a process of about two years - no longer does he suffer physical and mental fatigue, memory, concentration and muscular problems.
Raymond, has since trained in Christian preaching work himself despite tragically losing both his parents and his eldest brother, all in the last decade.
He's currently in Glasgow now as an Evangelist since he graduated from Bible College.
"Since I became a Christian, my whole life has changed. Jesus has done so much for me, He has restored my life and set me free from alcoholism and healed me from M.E.
"I'm a new person completely as He's given me a new life, a second chance."
And Raymond's message to others?
"God knows everything about you, what you've come through in your life, the rejection, the abuse, and the despair. He is longing for you to turn from your own way and come to him in repentance and put your trust in Jesus to be your Lord and saviour.
God can restore your life, he can set you free from every addiction. He can heal you, he can change you into a new person completely and change your life. But most of all he wants to have a relationship with you and give you the gift of eternal life (Salvation) through Jesus and you will live forever in heaven, Romans 6:23. You can only have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Jesus says' I am the way and the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me'' John 14:6 and Salvation is found in no one else Acts 4:12. You have to be born again John3:3 to enter God's kingdom, it is a new birth. To begin a live anew with Jesus we must have a new nature, man cannot enter heaven by his own effort , he can enter heaven only by recieving a new life through faith in Christ Galations 2:15-16 and Ephesians 2:8-9. Everyone has has fallen short of God's glory Romans 3:23, but it is only through Jesus, people can be made righteous. A Step into the Past

Three reasons why you need Jesus:
1. Because you have a past, Hebrews 13:8. He can walk into those places of sin and failure, wipe the slate clean and give you a new beginning.
2. Because you need a friend, Jesus knows the worst about you, yet he believes the best . Why, Because he sees you not as you are but as you will be when he gets through with you, what a friend.
3. Because he holds the future. Who else are you going to trust! In his hands you are safe and secure, tomorrow and for eternity, Jeremiah 29:11-13.

May I offer this prayer to you as your first step in becoming a born again Christian.

Lord Jesus Christ, I believe that you died for me, I acknowledge that I am a sinner, please come into my life and forgive my sins. Amen.
